Vision Wheel & Sprocket Fall Color Festival: September 24, 2016

Held at the John Muir southern unit of the Kettle Moraine state forest, the Fall Color Festival is independently run single day race.  This course, known for its well maintained and flowy single track, draws in many racers from all over the state.  Not overly technical, but still remaining challenging this course was met with rains in the days prior to the event.  With slick conditions in lower lying areas, the higher sections with sand remained tacky and fast.

Participants were able to select from several different course lengths ranging from 5 to 35 miles.  Racers are able to choose their race regardless of category.  The shortest race, 5 miles, is the perfect opportunity to introduce kids and beginners to the sport with a single lap of the brown and white loops.  The 12 mile race, equivalent to a citizen category 3 race consists of a single loop of the brown and blue.  With a brown loop and 2 blue loops, the 22 mile provides a good intermediate race for participants at roughly a Category 2 level.  The final race, 35 miles includes the entire brown, blue, connector and Emma Carlin green loops.

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #9 Treadfest: September 11, 2016

Being one of the most challenging courses in the WORS circuit, Treadfest remains a fan favorite among spectators.  Recently cleared trees by the newly opened switchbacks that climb towards the infamous rock garden offered the perfect vantage point for spectators.  Once again, the Grand hosts a course that promises plenty of rocks, roots and tight turns.  This course is offers some great white knuckling twists, but still manages to spread it into a fun package that doesn’t leave you ever wanting it to end.

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #8 Reforestation Ramble Race Report: August 21st, 2016

WORS race number 8 in the 2016 season was held at Reforestation Camp in Suamico, WI.  A long time staple in the series, known for its long marathon length course was shortened to add more intensity and single track into the race.  This year’s track focused, with the feedback from previous participants, on tighter turns and punchier climbs than long endurance efforts.  With a course that dries quickly and actually benefits from a little moisture to tack the trail, Sunday still proved to be a very fast race.

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #7 Hixon Forest Epic Race Report: August 7th, 2016

Back for a second time in La Crosse is this years race number 7.  Known for its white knuckling decent and leg scorching climb, the Hixon Forest Epic has also added more technical single track to round out one of the most technical courses in the 2016 catalog.  Category 2 and above, within minutes of race start, are shot down the brakepad cleaning decent until they reach the bottom of the mountain.  Once at the bottom a quick break on a short flat is enjoyed before the long climb back to the top.  From there, technical and tight single track keeps racers on their toes as they brace for another lap!

Dry race conditions and warm weather were very welcome as wet conditions would have made an already challenging course downright intense!  With over 1100 feet of climbing per lap for some categories, Hixon yet again proves to be a must for the 2016 schedule!

Junior Results

Spared the long climb, Junior racer’s circuit remained on top of the mountain, but still offered plenty of exciting challenges for our youngest competitors.

  • Charis Guerra 1st in age group for Junior Females age 9 AND 7th overall!
  • Brianna Fletcher 1st in age group for Junior Females age 10 AND 2nd overall!
  • James Wardle 2nd in age group for Junior Males age 9 AND 6th overall!
  • Abby Johnson 3rd in age group for Junior Females age 7 to 8 AND 13th overall!
  • Joshua Wardle 7th in age group for Junior Males age 7 to 8 AND 46th overall

  • McKenna Dwyer 2nd in age group for Cat 1 Junior Female AND 2nd overall!
  • Nick Sdrenka 2nd in age group for Cat 1 Junior Male AND 4th overall!

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #6 Midwest MTB Championships Race Report: July 23-24th, 2016

With half the series in the rear-view, WORS again hosted the Midwest Mountain Bike Championships (MWMTBC) presented by Trek at Cascade Mountain.  The MWMTBC has USAC sanctioned Cross-Country, Short Track and Enduro races over two days and promises great spectating and vendor representation.

The Cascade Mountain course is arguably one of the most difficult in the series throwing tight single track, rocky climbs and descents.  To compound this, risk of rain loomed over head for the later XC races on Saturday.  While earlier races for the Cat 2/3 finished with little precipitation, downpours started during the Junior races and continued on well past the scheduled start time for the Pro/Elite fields.  With a delayed start, conditions for the Elite men’s field can be best described as riding through a jar of crunchy-peanut butter.  Unfortunately, the Elite Women’s field saw no better conditions.

Still drying out from the heavy rains the day prior, Sunday held the Short Track and Enduro races in the morning and afternoon respectively.  Short Track, a race referred to as the “hurricane of pain” is a short, roughly 20 minute all out race covering a flatter, but faster course than what XC provides.  Enduro, a race with downhill roots, challenges racers with multiple timed descents down some of the course’s most technical sections.

XC Results

All results are as seen on the official Midwest Mountain Bike Championships site.  WORS will break down results for WORS participants on their results page.

Junior

With a dry start and a messy, wet finish, the Junior’s fields were both large and skilled.  A step away from normal WORS age/category breakouts, the MWMTBC moved some of Vision’s Cat 3 racers to Junior fields based on their ages.

  • Asa Guerra 1st in age group for Junior Females age 12 AND 1st overall!
  • Leah Fletcher 1st in age group for Junior Female age 13 AND 2nd overall!
  • Brianna Fletcher 1st in age group for Junior Females age 10 AND 4th overall!

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #5 Colectivo Coffee Bean Classic Race Report: July 10th, 2016

With half the WORS season complete, race number 5 returned to Minooka Park in Waukesha for the Colectivo Coffee Bean Classic.  This course starts with a quick sprint up the hill followed by open dual track then quickly ducks into tight, burmed single track.  A technical course overall, Minooka offers plenty of rock obstacles and narrow, bar-grabbing turns – a real change of pace from Firecracker!  Dry to the point of being slick in some turns, the conditions on Sunday were quite fast and made for some fantastic racing!

The furthest west race in WORS 2016, the Red Flint Firecracker, continues to be held at the beloved Eau Claire Co. Vision Wheel & Sprocket WEMS #5 Southern Kettles Classic Race Report: June 18th, 2016

This last weekend, in between events in the WORS circuit, fell race number 5 of the Wisconsin Endurance Mountain Bike Series (WEMS).  WEMS offers a variety of endurance lengths ranging from 12 hour solo/duo, 6 hour solo/duo and 3 hour solo races.  With so many options, there’s sure to be a race to fit your (and your buddies’) training.  If you aren’t specifically training for “endurance” events this may sound intimidating, but the relaxed and inviting atmosphere of a WEMS race is the perfect time to push yourself past your normal ride lengths.  The positive and encouraging environment could be described as feeling like that of a group ride, so whether you’re there to beat everyone or just yourself, there’s certain to be an event for any Category racer.

WEMS #5, held at the Emma Carlin trail system is part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest Southern Unit and it offers tight single track, technical climbs and plenty of rocks and roots.  These well maintained trails, thanks to the expert care of the trail crew, offer a great chance to brush up on all your handling skills.  The Southern Kettles, also offering the fast and flowy John Muir trail system, makes for a great family day destination as it has many different loops ranging from easy (1.25 miles) to hard (12 miles) difficulty, to name a couple.  Attaching both the John Muir and Emma Carlin trails is the Connector.  This trail, roughly 12 miles (out and back) in total, feels as though it is a mix of the two trails it connects – fast and flowy with technical skills being tested.  Combine all three for a long lap of 30 miles and I challenge you to find a better way to spend your day!

For the Emma Carlin on Saturday, WEMS changed the normal hour count to a lap count in hopes of offering a more enticing race for all rider levels.  Vision riders participated in 3 lap solo, 6 lap solo and 6 lap Duo events.

Yet to make it to a WEMS race? Check out a duo effort from the perspective of Brian and Matt Paterson.

3 Lap Duo Junior Results

Not a typical event for WEMS, Vision junior’s Asa and Charis Guerra wanted to try their hand in working together for the fastest time possible in a 3 Lap Duo Junior event.  Let’s get more Juniors in WEMS and make this a regular event!

  • Asa and Charis Guerra of Vision Cycling took 1st place with a total time of 2:59:50!

3 Lap Solo Results

  • Steve Lipski of Vision Wheel & Sprocket in 10th place with a total time of 2:17:06
  • Walt Sdrenka of Vision Wheel & Sprocket in 17th place with a total time of 2:24:22

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #3 Mt Morris Challenge Race Report: June 12th, 2016

Returning to the familiar Nordic Mountain in Mt Morris Wisconsin, which at one time served as a stop in the Pro XCT, was the third race in WORS 2016.  For WORS #3, the course remained the same from previous years showcasing fast descents, flowing single track through pines and just the right amount of climbing to challenge even the most experienced of riders.  With such an exciting course and being so spectator friendly, category fields were yet again full as were the sidelines with cheering.

This course can almost be described as deceptively challenging due to the ‘never-let-up’ nature of switching from climbing to technical descents.  With only a bit of rest able to be found in the lower pines behind the parking lot, there’s no wonder this course served for many years as the home of the WORS Cup.  With temperatures pushing the mid 90’s on Saturday, Sunday racers were met with a bit cooler temperatures and dry trails.  Overall an ideal course and great training as we head into the beginning of the mid-season.

Junior Results

With 3 races complete, the dedication of Vision Junior’s is apparent with some of the best results seen yet.  Brianna Fletcher, with a minute and a half gap, earned her best finish this year with a 1st overall!  Charis Guerra also seals her place in 1st for her age group.  James Wardle took his best result as well with a 2nd in age and 7th overall.

  • Brianna Fletcher 1st in age group for Junior Females 10 AND 1st overall!
  • Charis Guerra 1st in age group for Junior Females 9 AND 5th overall!
  • James Wardle 2rd in age group for Junior Males 9 AND 7th overall!
  • Joshua Wardle 7th in age group for Junior Males age 7 to 8 AND 42nd overall

With an eagerness to not repeat previous week’s mechanical issues, Vision Cat 1 Junior Nick Sdrenka found his legs and best finish yet with a 1st overall!  A more detailed report of his race can viewed here. McKenna Dwyer found out several days prior that she’s been suffering from exercise induced asthma.  Racing when your lungs are fighting you can be nothing short of torture!  So while not her best result on the podium this year, McKenna fought all the way and still finished strong in 3rd!  You can read her latest update here.

  • Nick Sdrenka 1st in age group for Cat 1 Junior Male AND 1st overall!
  • McKenna Dwyer 3rd in age group for Cat 1 Junior Female AND 3rd overall!

Sure to have been noticed, Vision Junior Elite Leah Fletcher has been absent from the results, but is certainly not forgotten while currently on the mend from an early season knee injury.  Leah, we can’t wait to have you back racing with us soon and wish you a speedy recovery! Injuries are never easy physically, but they are especially difficult emotionally – stay strong! You’ll be back before you know it!

Category 2 and 3 Results

Making up the bulk of the racers at any WORS event, Category 2 and 3 saw huge start fields yet again.  Partially due to such a great course, but also to the shortened WORS season of 10 races this year.

Vision Wheel & Sprocket WORS #2 Battle of Camrock Race Report: June 5th, 2016

Race number two in WORS 2016, the 25th season, was held at CamRock Park in Rockdale, Wisconsin on Sunday.  Despite some showers early to mid Saturday, the course dried out quickly and as always offered fast berms and some rocky single track.  The course remained the same from previous years, but it is clear with over 700 participants on Sunday that this will continue to be a favorite among racers since its introduction to the WORS circuit in 2011.  The massive start waves were met with mid 70’s temperatures and plenty of sun come race day, great conditions for the grassy fields and shaded woodlands.

With a new scoring and timing system for 2016, WORS is still hammering out the finer specifics, so final results on the race day of were met with some difficulty, but have since been posted on the offical WORS site.

Junior Results

Looking to repeat another great day of racing, Vision Wheel & Sprocket Junior’s represented with more strong results. Shout out to Brianna Fletcher taking 2nd in her age group, only missing a repeat of her 1st place result from WORS #1, but still showing her strength with a 3rd overall, great job!

  • Brianna Fletcher 2nd in age group for Junior Females age 10 AND 3rd overall!
  • Ryenn Foote 3rd in age group for Junior Females age 12 AND 12th overall!
  • James Wardle 3rd in age group for Junior Males age 9 AND 27th overall!
  • Joshua Wardle 9th in age group for Junior Males age 7 to 8 AND 67th overall
  • Isaac Johnson 12th in age group for Junior Males age 12 AND 86th overall

Vision Cat 1 Juniors again show their dedication by placing great results for the day.  Nick Sdrenka proved that something as devastating to results as a burped tire simply isn’t enough to stop him, he still took 1st in his age group and placed 2nd overall.  McKenna Dwyer was looking to repeat her hot start to the year with another 1st, but just missed out Sunday, she still finish very well with 2nd in age and overall leaving competition minutes behind.

  • Nick Sdrenka 1st in age group for Cat 1 Junior Male AND 2nd overall!
  • McKenna Dwyer 2nd in age group for Cat 1 Junior Females AND 2nd overall!
